Congo Environment et Nature
Congo Environnement et Nature Mission. We are Congo Environnement et Nature (CEN), a non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in February 2018 with the aim of contributing to the preservation and restoration of the environment in DR Congo. Our mission is to intervene in the sustainable management of the environment and sustainable development, in particular through the tools of environmental education.
Project description
Title: Urban Reforestation and Environmental Education in The Haut - Katanga province/DR Congo
This project consists of training young schoolchildren (6 to 12) in forest restoration and arouses in them the desire to fight against climate change. According to the United Nations Environmental Program, the Democratic Republic of Congo has half of Africa's forest and water resources, paradoxically with alarming rates of deforestation, species depletion, heavy metal pollution and soil degradation are observed. However, these effects contribute to the global problems of climate change as can be observed in some provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo such as Kinshasa, Nord Kivu, and Haut- Katanga province, etc. The Haut- Katanga province is more exposed to drought and a significant rise in temperature, with an environmental risk linked to mining and population growth which promotes environmental degradation and deforestation. Faced with this regional situation, Congo Environnement et Nature has integrated an Education program for Sustainable Development and climate action since 2018. This
program raise awareness among children (6 to 12 years), involves them in forest restoration, sustainable school gardens, and arouses in them the desire to fight against climate change and to finally adapt to its effects.
The program is designed to meet the following objectives:
1. Enable participants to develop an understanding of what environmental issues are happening in their communities and globally, learn how to lead themselves and others, and to build capacity to use the levers of power to create change;
2. Enable participants develop an understanding of best practices that contribute to effective urban forest restoration;
3. Promote urban forestry, sustainable garden to fight against climate change and hunger.
Results achieved so far
We engaged 60 schools in the city of Lubumbashi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM_ZXz3287g). Trained youth are increasingly
involved in reforestation activities such as seed collection, nursery development, garden and tree planting in their schools and respective communities. Thus, they have initiated adaptation and mitigation activities in their community by also planting trees that provide fruits for self- consumption and increase the quality of their habitats.
Our future strategies is to engage more schools and create a lot of school garden.
